The Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid of the Federal Republic of German, Mr Christoph Strasser and his delegation, comprising of his Personal Assistant, Ms Anja Kersten and the Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy, Mr Frank Maier, visited the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) recently to familiarise themselves with the operations of the Commission. The delegation sought to understand the role of the Commission and its responsibilities as well as to understand the challenges that the Commission was facing with a view to finding possible areas of collaboration.

The delegation also had an opportunity to discuss issues of compliance with the Paris Principles. They also discussed the outcome of the Baseline Survey on the human rights situation in the country and its use in the Strategic Planning process for the Commission.

The delegation also sought to understand the structure of the Commission and appointment of Commissioners, operationalisation of the Commission’s Thematic Working Groups, the Commission’s role in human rights law reform and development, the Commission’s role in the UPR process, its independent status and relationship with CSOs, among other issues.ZHRC was represented by the Chairperson, Commissioner Elasto Hilarious Mugwadi, the Executive Secretary, Ms Jester Helena Charewa and the two Deputy Executive Secretaries for Programmes and Administration, Mr Erick Mukutiri and Mr Hosiah Gadzai respectively.
